For the disabled community, mobility plays a significant role in determining quality of life, general adaptability, and overall integration and inclusion in society. According to a report supported by the World Bank, approximately 4 to 9 crore people in India experience some form of disability, of which almost 69% reside within rural areas and underserved communities that lack adequate access to assistive technologies.
In spite of growing efforts within the country’s infrastructure and economy, financial barriers continue to stand in the way of helpful aids that like wheelchairs, particularly so for those with low incomes. Such gaps not only limit something as direct as movement but expand towards adding hurdles to achieving educational and employment opportunities, thereby further isolating disabled individuals and reinforcing cycles of poverty. This lack of inclusion into mainstream society even impacts areas like self-esteem, mental health and well-being.
Recognizing the urgency of these issues, Wheels of Change was founded to comprehensively address the mobility challenges faced by disabled communities from underserved regions in India. By providing necessary tools, advocating for better access, and designing innovative and empowering resources, this project aims to support individuals so they can live their lives with increased independence, dignity, and acceptance.
